NAVTA Celebrates Veterinary Assistants May 18–24, 2025 | Approved Veterinary Assistant Week

May 8, 2025 (BRIDGEWATER, NJ) The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) is proud to celebrate the contributions and stories of Veterinary Assistants during Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) Week, taking place May 18–24, 2025. This annual celebration recognizes the essential role that veterinary assistants play in clinics, hospitals, shelters, and beyond — supporting both animal care and the veterinary team.

NAVTA’s mission is to advance the profession of veterinary nursing through strategic advocacy, awareness, and professional development. AVA Week underscores the importance of Veterinary Assistants within that mission—recognizing their work, honoring their journeys, and inspiring others to join the field.

This year’s theme, “Paths to Success,” highlights the diverse and meaningful journeys of Approved Veterinary Assistants. Each day during AVA Week, NAVTA will share the story of a different AVA graduate—from students entering the field to professionals making career shifts and seasoned assistants expanding their impact. Their stories are a testament to the passion, dedication, and purpose that drive the veterinary profession forward.

“Veterinary assistants are often the first step in an animal’s care and a client’s connection to the practice,” said Dennis Lopez, Chair of NAVTA’s AVA Committee. “AVA Week is our opportunity to spotlight their vital contributions and the unique paths that brought them into this profession. Whether it’s their first role in animal care or a step toward becoming a credentialed technician, their impact is undeniable.”

NAVTA developed the Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) designation to elevate and standardize veterinary assistant education. Today, more than 70 NAVTA-approved programs across the U.S. and Canada prepare students for AVA designation through high schools, adult education centers, and online learning. Over 2,500 AVAs are currently practicing across North America, providing skilled support to veterinarians and credentialed veterinary technicians.

Veterinary Assistants perform essential tasks such as restraining animals, assisting with exams and procedures, preparing surgical areas, cleaning and maintaining hospital environments, and supporting communication with clients. Their work ensures smooth operations and compassionate care every day.

Throughout AVA Week, NAVTA invites AVAs, their colleagues, and the broader veterinary community to join in celebrating these vital members of the team. From photo sharing to inspirational spotlights, NAVTA will be highlighting real people, real journeys, and real impact.
