Where We Stand: NAVTA Releases First DEIB Survey Report

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) is pleased to release its first-ever Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Landscape Survey Report, Where We Stand. This landmark report offers the most detailed look to date at how credentialed veterinary technicians view DEIB in their workplaces and within the broader veterinary community.

While responses generally reflect a positive view of workplace acceptance, the report also reveals important areas that warrant further exploration—such as representation, disability inclusion, and language accessibility.

This survey establishes an essential baseline. For the first time, NAVTA has data that can inform future research and initiatives, helping to identify patterns, illuminate member experiences, and support efforts that strengthen the veterinary technician profession.

Key findings include:

  • 61.4% of respondents identified as White or Caucasian, 69.9% as cisgender women, and 60.6% as heterosexual—highlighting the need to better understand and support underrepresented groups.
  • 22% of participants reported having a disability or workplace challenge, with varied perceptions of support.
  • Spanish-speaking and multilingual respondents noted language access challenges, particularly in education and training resources.
  • Younger and LGBTQIA+ respondents were more likely to view DEIB as highly important.

Importantly, this data will serve as a benchmark for future studies, allowing NAVTA to track changes over time, evaluate the impact of DEIB initiatives, and tailor support to meet the evolving needs of the profession.

NAVTA extends its sincere thanks to the DEIB Committee, contributing authors, and all members who participated in the survey. Together, we are building a more inclusive, supportive, and sustainable future for veterinary nursing.
