As we move into the second half of the year, our association has finalized elections and welcomed our incoming leadership team. We extend our sincere appreciation to all members who participated in the election process and to those who continue to volunteer their time and expertise in support of our profession.
Our primary focus this year remains legislative advocacy and preparation for the anticipated opening of Maine’s Veterinary Practice Act in 2027. This presents an important opportunity to strengthen and modernize regulations that impact veterinary technicians, veterinary practices, and the patients and clients we serve every day.
To ensure that veterinary technicians have a strong voice in these discussions, we are actively collaborating with the Maine Veterinary Medical Association and other stakeholders. Together, we are working to identify priorities that will support the profession while enhancing access to high-quality veterinary care across the state.
Key areas of focus include:
- Title Protection: Ensuring that credentialed veterinary technicians are recognized and distinguished through appropriate professional title protection.
- Scope of Practice: Clarifying and modernizing the duties veterinary technicians are educated, trained, and credentialed to perform.
- Workforce Development: Addressing the ongoing veterinary technician workforce shortage by supporting initiatives that improve recruitment, retention, recognition, and career sustainability.
- Veterinary Technician Representation: We continue to explore opportunities for veterinary technician representation on the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine. Having a veterinary technician perspective represented at the regulatory level would help ensure that decisions affecting veterinary practice reflect the contributions, expertise, and unique challenges of the veterinary technician profession.
These efforts represent a significant step toward strengthening the veterinary technician profession in Maine. While legislative work often requires patience and persistence, we are committed to advocating for policies that recognize the value of veterinary technicians and support the continued growth of our profession.
We look forward to keeping members informed as discussions progress and encourage everyone to stay engaged. Your input, participation, and advocacy will be critical as we work toward meaningful improvements for veterinary technicians throughout the state.
