Shrewsbury, NJ – [3/1/2025] – The New Jersey Veterinary Technicians & Assistants (NJVTA), the credentialing body for Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) in New Jersey, has announced a significant bylaw change that will impact credentialing requirements. This change, passed via membership vote on January 31, 2025, will officially take effect on January 1, 2027.
Key Changes to Credentialing Requirements
Effective January 1, 2027, the NJVTA will no longer recognize reciprocity as a pathway for credentialing. Moving forward, all new NJVTA applicants must meet the following certification criteria:
- Passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
- Graduated from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology/Nursing program
Grandfathering Period Available Until December 31, 2026
Veterinary technicians who have passed the VTNE but have not completed an AVMA-accredited program may still retain their credentials under a grandfathering provision if they:
Have maintained their NJVTA credential in good standing before the bylaw change.
Ensure their certification remains active thereafter.
New applications under the reciprocity clause may be accepted until this date.
This update marks a shift in NJVTA’s credentialing process, aligning New Jersey’s veterinary technician certification standards with national accreditation benchmarks to ensure consistency across the nation.
Action Required:
- Current CVTs meeting grandfathering criteria should ensure their credentials remain active within the NJVTA.
- New applicants after January 1, 2027, must adhere to the new certification requirements.
